Black Mold: Facts vs. Myths
"Black mold" usually refers to Stachybotrys chartarum, a greenish-black mold that grows on water-damaged, cellulose-rich material like drywall paper and wood. It is treated with the same containment-and-removal process as any other mold species; there is no separate "black mold protocol," and color alone cannot identify a species without lab testing.
What the color actually tells you
Mold color depends on species, the material it's growing on, and lighting, not on how dangerous it is. Plenty of common, lower-concern molds (Cladosporium, Alternaria) also appear dark or black. You cannot identify Stachybotrys, or rule it out, by eye. A lab culture or PCR test on a physical sample is the only way to know the species for certain, and for remediation purposes it usually doesn't change the process anyway: contain, remove, clean, dry, verify.
What the health evidence actually says
Stachybotrys and other molds can trigger allergic and respiratory symptoms in sensitive individuals, and CDC guidance treats indoor mold exposure broadly as a health concern worth addressing regardless of species. The more extreme "toxic black mold" claims that circulated in the 2000s, permanent neurological damage from ordinary household exposure, are not supported by the mainstream medical literature. The practical takeaway is the same either way: address the moisture source and remove the growth, rather than trying to diagnose the species yourself from a photo.
Does it change how remediation works?
No. The IICRC S520 remediation process (see our process page) doesn't have a separate track for Stachybotrys. Classification is based on the extent and location of growth (Condition 1, 2, or 3), not the species. A contractor treating a "black mold" job differently, charging a large premium purely because of the color, without a lab result to justify it, is a flag worth asking about.
