The size guideline is a reasonable starting point but not the whole picture. Mold behind a wall, in HVAC ductwork, or resulting from sewage or floodwater contamination should be professionally assessed regardless of the visible square footage, because the real extent is unknown or the material is contaminated in a way basic cleaning does not address.
The other practical consideration is recurrence. A small patch that keeps coming back despite cleaning is a sign the moisture source has not actually been fixed, at which point the DIY question becomes secondary to finding out what is really going on.
